Allan writes the songs that make the whole world sing …

… No wait, that’s Barry Manilow. Allan writes the words that make our communication products talk … to the people you want listening … in their language. A one-time sports writer, he knows media and how it works, which makes him an effective PR planner, too. And as a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Eagles and the Virgina Cavaliers, he knows adversity. That, he’ll tell you, only makes him tougher.
Get to Know Me
What is your favorite book. No, wait, what are your two favorite books?
I’m glad you asked for two. I really liked 100 Years of Solitude, even though I probably didn’t understand it. I just remember getting totally lost in it and emerging hours later, wondering where the time went. It had a magical component that makes it similar to my other favorite book, Peace Like a River, which, as I recall, was ultimately about human goodness and decency and the miraculous possibilities of life.
Do you know any odd stories?
How’s this. My wife and I were shopping for a new church after spending nearly a decade at a Methodist church near our home. One Sunday, I thought I’d try the local Unitarian Church, not realizing A.) their 9 o’clock gathering is more of an informative lecture than an actual worship service, and B.) it was Halloween. Upon entering the church I was handed a candle and a piece of paper discussing the Wiccan faith. I felt a bit like Dorothy in a strange new land, but I stayed out of curiosity. At one point, the woman giving the lecture, herself a Wiccan, asked if there were other Wiccans in the audience. Two people, a woman and a younger girl beside her, raised their hands. That woman, I later discovered, dated my roommate during my freshman year of college more than 35 years ago in Charlottesville, Virginia!
Were you bald then, too?
No, I had hair.
